2012 NSTA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS were held during February and whilst we were very lucky with the weather, we saw some fantastic tennis from our local players. Congratulations to all winners and runners up and special congratulations to our very deserving winner of the Sportsmanship award Lauren Riley. Congratulations also to Encouragement Award winners Poppy Mountjoy and Nick Benecke, and our thanks to Lane Cove West Tennis Club for sponsoring these awards and making them possible. The NSTA conducts the following junior tournaments, round robins and challenges, catering for all standards and ages:
PRIMARY SCHOOLS CHALLENGES are held on one Saturday evening in each school term, Primary Schools Challenges are a proud and successful tradition in the NSTA. Commenced in 1979 by local coach, Peter Betteridge, they have grown from the 16 children who participated in that Challenge between Chatswood and Northbridge Primary Schools, to attracting today some 500 children from approximately 40 local primary schools.
The enthusiasm from the children who participated in that original Challenge inspired Peter, assisted by Patricia Governor, to organise two Challenges a year amongst local primary schools. In November 2005 such were the numbers, that it was decided to hold one Challenge each school term so that they would become more manageable. However, since then almost every Challenge has continued to attract well over 400 players requiring some seven or eight venues and at least 160 pizzas each time!!
Teams are considered to be 3 pairs and schools may enter more than one team and/or single pairs. Players are divded into round robin pools and allocated a venue where they play 4 or 5 doubles matches in an evening. Up to 50 divisions are required to accommodate the players and winners and runners up in every division receive trophies. The best performing team is declared the winner for that term and the 12 top performing schools over the first three terms of the year now play off in Term 4 in a Masters Challenge to determine the winning school for the year.
We endeavour to keep school teams together at the same venue so that the children partipate in the company and with the support of their peers, whilst parents socialise on the sidelines, cheering and encouraging the players.
Any Primary Schools are invited and encouraged to participate. For any enquiries, please contact the NSTA Administrator, Sue Delmege on 9436 2729 or email sue@nsta.com.au
